Butler: The new book, “The Force of Non-Violence,” is concerned with women, for sure, but with all people who are considered to be more or less ungrievable. I work with the feminist idea of “relationality” in order to show not only how lives are interdependent, but also how our ethical obligations to sustain each other’s lives follow from that interdependency. The interdiction against violence is a way of asserting and honoring that bond based on the equal value of lives, but this is not an abstract or formal principle. We require each other to live and that is as true of familial or kinship ties as it is of transnational and global bonds. The critique of individualism has been an important component of both feminist and Marxist thought, and it now becomes urgent as we seek to understand ourselves as living creatures bound to human and nonhuman creatures, to entire systems and networks of life. The various threats of destruction can take the form of state violence, feminicidio, abandonment of migrants, global warming. We have to rethink the ties of life to know why we are obligated to oppose violence even when, or precisely when, hostilities escalate. Changes brought by shifting demographics and court-ordered redistricting have transformed Virginia’s legislative races, and the party that captures control of the State Capitol will get the added prize of having the power to redraw political maps in its favor during redistricting in 2021, potentially tilting state and congressional elections its way for the next decade.

Companies across America are increasingly talking about their “net promoter scores” — which tracks customer satisfaction — and using it as an important business yardstick. But that may be a bad idea, Khadeeja Safdar and Inti Pacheco of the WSJ report. Interestingly, on the North Fork, fish shops limit their stock to local catches and shellfish. On the South Fork, in the Hamptons, most shops catering to summer tourists take a broader approach, also offering rib-eye steaks and New York strip steaks, farmed salmon and thawed, frozen shrimp. But, for me, the bounty from local waters is too good to ignore: live lobsters, wild striped bass, swordfish, scallops, mussels or clams.

Morgan can pinpoint the moment this interest was awakened. One day in the fall of 2001, as he was waiting to board a plane at London’s Gatwick Airport, he spotted the front cover of a new book, James Naughtie’s “The Rivals,” an account of the relationship between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, Blair’s chancellor of the Exchequer who would later succeed him as prime minister. The cover bore a black-and-white photograph of the two men: one youthful and telegenic, a visionary sparkle playing about his eyes and mouth; the other solemn and aloof, dependable perhaps but distinctly uninspiring. “It completely changed my life,” Morgan said of the image. “I realized there was a kind of Cain and Abel story there, and I knew at once how to tell it.” Mr. Tosi would frequently be involved in hairstyles and makeup, unusual for a costume designer. Why? “Because the face is fundamental,” he explained in a 2006 interview with the journal Framework. “You know, you do a lot on the costumes, but then the whole scene is focused on the face.”

Schedule a TripSome history: In 1955, the architect Wallace Harrison came up with a master plan for what was then called Idlewild Airport. It prescribed stand-alone terminals built and run by competing airlines encircling a traffic loop. The plan was a kind of recipe for architectural scene-stealing. During its early years, Kennedy boasted the world’s longest continuous cocktail lounge (in the since-demolished American Airlines terminal designed by Kahn and Jacobs), and Tippett-Abbett-McCarthy-Stratton’s (now also sadly demolished) 1960 Worldport for Pan Am, the architectural analog to Marilyn Monroe’s billowing skirt in “The Seven Year Itch.” Follow @privacyproject on Twitter and The New York Times Opinion Section on Facebook and Instagram.

No place stays the same forever, and few of us want to live somewhere that is frozen in amber, where entrepreneurs cannot take a chance with their ideas and open a business. We seek the new, and the novel, and welcome improvements in our neighborhoods with open arms. But we also need places to anchor us. Novelty is wonderful, but only when balanced with the familiar. And when those familiar businesses close, for whatever reason, our reaction also occurs on a human scale. A sigh of resignation. A flood of memories. And sometimes, if you truly loved the place, a sadness so genuine it can trigger tears.

I often think about how Morrison wrote her debut novel, “The Bluest Eye,” in stolen moments, while working full-time as an editor and raising her two sons as a single mother. ICARUS WAS NOT the first to wear feathers, but he was perhaps the most hexed by their promise of transformation. According to Greek myth, his father, the architect and inventor Daedalus, desperate for them to escape the wrath of King Minos, built wings out of twine, wax and plumes shed by passing birds — an outfit that might as easily have appeared on a 19th-century cancan dancer at the Moulin Rouge in Paris. Don’t mistake costume for prowess, Icarus was warned, but in the ecstasy of seeing the world from above, he forgot his human limitations and flew too high: When the sun melted the wax, he lost his wings and dropped from the sky.
