Mr. Bullock has made money in politics the centerpiece of his campaign: It’s so central, in fact, that where other candidates have an “issues” or “policies” link, his website says, “One Big Idea.” But human rights activists and academics around the world, including Noam Chomsky, view the case against him as part of the government’s effort to quash criticism ahead of crucial elections later this year.
It carried a profound message, he said: “Our destinies are fully tied; our differences are insignificant.” The housing sector accounts for as little as 3 percent of economic output during recessions and about twice that during booms. Other pieces of the economy are much bigger, but they don’t change nearly as much from boom to bust. Government spending, for instance, has hovered between 17 percent and 20 percent of the economy for decades. The three-percentage-point swing is about the same in each case, but government accounts for much more of the economy. Translation: Housing punches way above its weight.
For months, powerful companies including Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook have been working to shrink online video sizes. But their work just got more important, because Apple has now joined the partnership too. For an “Incredible Women” event hosted by Porter, Net-a-Porter’s magazine, and promoted by the Lede, Special Projects booked Ms. Theron and chose for her to read a passage by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on the importance of raising boys right. Storm Reid and Mahershala Ali did a reading of correspondence between Barack Obama and a young girl.
What the authors found was that trigger warnings had little effect on participants’ mood, how negatively they rated the material or their ability to later read the neutral passage. If you can, try to find a fennel bulb with luxuriant fronds to chop up for the salad, so it can be both vegetable and herb. But if you can find only shorn fennel bulbs, some chopped parsley or dill will work just as well, adding color and freshness.
For a limited time, Best Buy has the Sphero R2-Q5 for .99 shipped (plus tax). Wait: R2-Q5? He's basically a jet-black, gold-accented R2-D2, or R2's "evil cousin," if you prefer. Regular price: 0! Congressional deals reached among small groups of even influential members have also been known to fall apart. For now, this deal looks promising, but nothing is final until it is final.
Twins utility infielder Ehire Adrianza won a Venezuelan winter ball championship with Astudillo in 2014-15, for Caribes de Anzoátegui. Adrianza thought Astudillo, then in Class A, could hit, though he struggled for playing time on a team with 16 eventual major leaguers. All the joys and trials of raising children are here. Players choose between pushing their digital progeny to attain conventional success and allowing them some semblance of childhood innocence. They must give career guidance and endure (just barely) their teenager’s first dates. Everything leads up to the gaokao, the highly competitive college entrance exam that decides the fortunes of so many young Chinese people.
With the coming of Islam to India in the second millennium C.E., many features of Indian building, such as screens, carved brackets, corbeled arches and deep eaves projecting hard black shadows, became part of Indo-Islamic architecture. Dynasties rose and fell, the religious makeup of India changed, but Indian architecture, like Indian food, music and literature, was able to absorb the new influences. It was only with the coming of British rule to India in the 18th century that a culture that had prided itself on its powers of assimilation was confronted with an unassimilable influence. The irony of precolonial and colonial contact was that while the former was outwardly more violent, it was inwardly creative, whereas the latter, though less physically violent, stultified the Indian spirit. For the first time in India’s history, cultural assimilation became a forced imperative rather than something natural and organic. • China has held talks with Venezuela to protect its investments there. Iran sees Iraq as its literal gateway to regional influence — the first stop on a land bridge to its proxies in Syria and Lebanon. More recently, Iraq has been critical to Iran’s survival of painful American economic sanctions, thanks to an American waiver allowing it to buy oil and gas from Iran. Iraq is also a major customer for Iranian goods that are not under sanction, including food and construction materials. In Shenzhen’s Futian district, on the ninth floor of a concrete tower, there is an open-air sales floor that works as a sort of corporate embassy for the social network. The 5,000-square-foot space is run by the local partner, called Meet Social, but has been designed with Facebook’s guidance. It functions as an experience center for the Silicon Valley giant — the only one of its type in the world.
